Free of all commercial traffic and navigable for 220 km, the Shannon River also passes through a number of beautiful lakes (or Loughs as they are known in Ireland). The 63km long Erne River has been magnificently restored, and it’s 34 old bridges add character to your journey. The waterways are teeming with salmon, pike, and perch. Traditional Irish pubs and charming Celtic music will welcome you ashore. The charming little town of Boyle boasts the ruins of a Cistercian Abbey founded in 1161. Visit the castle in Athlone that dates back to 1210. The peaceful waterways of Ireland are home to many wildlife sanctuaries.
